Kate Bull

I am an artist and writer, based in the vibrant coastal city of Brighton, in the U.K.

I took up drawing again in 2020 after a twenty year hiatus. At first, I drew purely as a hobby, enjoying the meditative-like quality of producing highly detailed graphite artwork. But after positive feedback for my drawings, as well as several commissions for illustrations, I decided to take the exciting leap into a career as an illustrator and artist alongside my writing.

I specialise in graphite drawings, predominantly using a 0.2mm mechanical pencil, which enables me to capture intricate details and produce incredibly smooth rendering. For a selection of my work, I also use ink, metal gilding, and colour pencils. I am entirely self-taught, and I'm always striving to expand my horizons in terms of subject, medium, and technique.

I am a huge fan of fantasy fiction as well as mythologies from around the world, and these offer constant inspiration for the fantastical elements of my artwork. I am passionate about creating characters that intrigue, that make you want to know more about who they are, and the world they live in.

I also take inspiration from the Art Nouveau style, particularly the organic forms and sinuous lines of the natural world. I like to incorporate these into the details of my artwork, such as in the clothing, borders, or background. By combining this with the fantasy elements of my drawings, I am able to create a unique feel to the work.
