In Germanic folklore, elves were beings with magical powers and supernatural beauty. By the end of the medieval period the term elf became conflated with fairy to describe powerful creatures with human appearance.

The more modern interpretation of elves as distinct from fairies emerged from nineteenth-century Romantic literature. This inspired a new range of fantasy characters and their associated stories, such as Galadriel, Elrond, and Legolas from J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic Lord of the Rings saga.

In this drawing, I have imagined an elf prince, decked out in his finery, looking imperiously beautiful. I have given him an intricate tattoo, which might be a symbol of his royalty, a sign of his warrior skills, or a sigil of his magical abilities.
