The myth of a fairy queen has long been an inspiration for artists and writers. In the legend of Thomas the Rhymer (c.1220-1298) the fairy queen is ruler of a nameless kingdom, though in a translation by Robert Grave she is called the Queen of Elphame. In Irish mythology, the Morrigan is the goddess of war, destiny, and fertility, and her name translates as the ‘phantom queen’ or ‘great queen’.

I have depicted the fairy queen as an imperious and powerful being, ruling over her nameless land from her throne. Behind her is a great serpent, traditionally a symbol of rebirth, transformation, immortality, healing, and fertility. In Greek mythology, serpents are powerful symbols associated with Hecate, goddess of magic, Hermes, messenger of the gods, and Asclepius, god of medicine.
